And other pain is aching, cramping or radiating – like arthritis in the knee that makes it painful to go upstairs.
Some pain is short-lived, while other pain nags us each and every day.
But whatever the type and feeling of pain, the experience of pain can get in the way of day-to-day life.
But what is pain? How does it even start? Why do we feel it? And what is it telling us about what’s happening in our body? To understand how pain happens (and how we feel it) we have to take a trip into the body to look at pain from the inside out.
What is pain?
Pain is a protective mechanism that tells our body that something isn’t right – that there’s an injury or trauma that must be tended to.Pain generally falls into one of two categories: acute and chronic.
- Acute pain usually feels sharp, stabbing, splitting, pounding and/or radiating, and generally goes away after the injury is healed. Examples of acute pain include a headache, cramps, twisting our ankle, stubbing our toe or bumping our funny bone.
- Chronic pain generally feels more dull, radiating, crushing or spreading. Unlike acute pain, which leaves when the area has healed, chronic pain can torment us day after day. Examples of chronic pain include knee or joint pain, muscle aches due to wear and tear, or osteoarthritis.
Pain and Inflammation
You may have heard of inflammation, but what does it mean in the context of pain? Have you ever noticed that when you stub your toe or bump your funny bone, that the area becomes red and swollen? This is inflammation, your body’s protective response to painful stimuli, at work! The body creates inflammation to send blood and fluid to the tissue. In the short term, inflammation helps the damaged tissue to heal. But if inflammation sticks around for the long term, like with osteoarthritis, its purpose is no longer productive. Inflammatory mediators stick around the injured joint. And to add insult to injury, they can actually make the sensation of pain more intense!
A Headache Isn’t An Aspirin Deficiency
The go-to solution for many types of pain is to pop a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, also known as an NSAID, like Aspirin, Tylenol or Advil. When used day after day, these guys can be hard on the body – especially the gut. Plus, these types of drugs don’t do anything to treat the actual cause of the pain – once the painkiller wears off, the pain often returns.Conventional prescriptions can have many side-effects as well.
Natural options for dealing with these types of pain include herbal remedies with limited effectiveness, or muscle relaxants that lead to drowsiness. But such approaches only mask the symptoms, and do nothing to deal with what’s actually causing the pain – also known as the root cause.Approaching Pain from the Inside Out
